Discussion on the Conducted Monitoring aimed to identify the Problems of Persons with Disabilities

The “Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities” NGO for Persons with Disabilities has conducted a study in the framework of the “Human Rights: Monitoring and Publicity” project implemented in the scope of the sub-grant allocated by the EU funded “Commitment to Constructive Dialogue” project. The study is aimed at assisting human rights in Armenia, by promoting improvement of public policy in the area.

On 2 March, a Town Hall format discussion was held in Vanadzor city. People with disabilities that participated in the monitoring, as well as representatives from Lori regional administration, Vanadzor Prosecutor’s Office, State University, passport department participated in the discussion.

According to Ms Anush Aslanyan, President of the “Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities” NGO, first of all it is important to make public structures available to citizens of all types of disabilities. She also mentioned that the report contains options that offer temporary solutions (e.g. allocate a special rooms on the grounds floors of the public building without elevators, where the public servant can go down and meet the person with disability).

It was noteworthy that all the participants agreed with the recommendations in the report and expressed readiness to support their implementation. According to the Vice-rector of the State University, they have not paid much attention to the problem before, and now they will take measures to install special handles in the university’s toilets.
